Installing a WordPress Theme (Step by Step)
Every good party needs a theme, and a blog is no different! After all, sometimes blogging feels like a party, right?
What is a site theme and why do you need one?
A WordPress Theme is a pre-coded and optimized file package that provides the functionality, styling and oftentimes the required plugins a webpage requires to function.
If a website were a cake, the site theme would be the frosting and sprinkles!
Once you’ve purchased hosting and a domain name, it’s time to install the theme:
Navigate to your WordPress dashboard:
Your dashboard may look slightly different, that’s totally normal!
Hover over the Appearance tab on the left column of your dashboard, and select Themes:
You will see a collection of WordPress themes which are free to use! If you are just starting out, I recommend using one of these themes to get a feel for the layout and navigation (you can always choose a new theme).
Select the theme you would like to use. You can read more about each theme by clicking “Theme Details”. Once you’ve decided on a theme, click the Activate button:
Your theme is now fully uploaded! If you click on your homepage icon in the top right corner of the dashboard, you will see your newly built site:
You can edit elements of your website theme by clicking the Customize button in the top bar of your header:
Within the Customize window, you have the option to edit your menus, logo, headers and even input CSS code if you want to.
Well there you have it! Your theme is installed and ready for you to build. If you have more questions on themes or anything WordPress, feel free to contact me and get your answer!
